Can you use OO gauge outdoors?
In theory, OO gauge can be used outdoors, modern nickel silver track, although will require a lot of cleaning, will stand up to the weather just fine, however, O gauge or G scale remains the preferred choice.
If you are considering a OO gauge railway in your garden, you may want to install a small test section of track first to ascertain if OO gauge outdoors is as rosy as you imagine. The weak points of the track will undoubtedly be finer components such as turnout mechanisms and rail joiners resulting in an insurmountable amount of cleaning and electrical continuity issues.
Once these issues have been addressed, you should consider debris. Although the odd fallen leaf may not cause a larger scale locomotive many problems, consider what it will do to a 1:76 scale loco. Wind shear may also be a problem for some lighter rolling stock so weighty models would be a wise choice. Also, think about your scenery, on an indoor layout, your ballast and other scenic items are often secured using a PVA glue, you should question if this time-honoured process is appropriate for the outdoors.
There is no reason why OO gauge can't be used outdoors, but you may have to think differently than you would when building a railway indoors.
