What scale is a 28mm figure used by wargamers?
28mm wargaming figures, sometimes referred to as miniatures, are the most popular scale of gaming figures on the market today (2021).
Years ago, 20mm figures were dominant amongst players, but the slightly larger 28mm scale presents a figure small enough to fit most dioramas whilst being large enough to paint and add decoration, something that's becoming increasingly popular in the gaming community.
28mm refers to the height of figures from toes to eye level. This seemingly strange way of measuring figures ensures that any hat designs are not accounted for within the measurement. Another slight quirk in the measuring system is that the measurement doesn't necessarily pertain to any one figure in a set, but to the average height of a figure within a genre or range, thus allowing for a mixture of poses, stances and figure heights within a game or set.
In most modelling, a literal measurement is an unusual way to refer to scale. To give you an idea, 28mm figures equate to a scale of around 1:56 while 20mm works out at around 1:72.
