What should I do if my traction tyre breaks?
Traction tyres were used on many older model railway locomotives to improve their traction, not surprisingly, when they break the locomotive is often left unable to move little more than itself.
This can be very frustrating and is a problem faced by many modellers on a regular basis, but what can you do to remedy the problem?
If you have ever tried fitting any old random replacement traction tyre to your locomotive, you likely discovered that it doesn't work. Other solutions that don't work include gluing the old broken tyre back onto the wheel and painting an abrasive substance to the wheel, don't worry, we've all been there!
Unfortunately, although many traction tyres look the same, the smallest difference can affect its performance (and willingness to stay attached to the wheel) so it's best to source an appropriate replacement tyre for your model. These can be obtained through the manufacturer or a specialist parts store. Have as much information as possible about your model to hand when contacting them and don't worry if you no longer have your model's catalogue number, the class, running number, make and livery are often enough for stores to identify your model.
Fitting your new tyre is easiest done by stripping down the bogie to reveal the outer edge of the wheel, take your time and this should be a fairly straightforward job.
Some modellers don't mind traction tyres, many others are not so keen though. If you are having problems with your traction tyres, you have our deepest sympathies.
