What is quartering in model railway?
When modellers talk about quartering, they are referring to the side-rods on their locomotives being set to the correct position in relation to each other.
Contrary to belief, the side-rods on either side of a locomotive do not rotate level with each other, nor are they set at polar opposites to one another (with one at the top while the other ones at the bottom). In actual fact, the side rods of a locomotive a set with 90 degrees of separation, so it's more like one side is following the other.
Because 90 degrees is a quarter of a rotation, the process of setting side-rods in this way is known as quartering. This position is necessary to avoid jamming and maintain momentum.
