What are 5 and 7 plank wagons?
5 and 7 plank wagons are a type of railway wagon design dating back to the early 1900s. They are a simple design of open wagon (featuring no roof) comprising a metal framework encompassing wooden sidewalls, the height of the wagon's sidewalls is measured by how many planks deep it is i.e. a 5 plank wagon is 5 planks deep and a 7 plank wagon is 7 planks deep.
During the 1800s, railway wagons had been fairly lightweight in terms of what they could carry, although there were some designs specifically catering for heavier or irregular shaped loads, the mainstay of wagons consisted of 1, 2, 3 and 4 plank wagons, and with freight levels increasing, the railways needed a design that could carry more.
The solution was simple, and the wagons that had served so well up until now were simply constructed with higher sidewalls and in 1902 the 5 plank wagon was born with a 7 plank version superseding it just a few years later.
