What is a Felix Pole wagon?
Felix Pole was an ambitious employee of the Great Western Railway. Born in 1877, by the age of 27 he was working in the headquarters at Paddington Station and by the age of 44 was appointed General Manager.
During that time, one of Pole's many accomplishments was the introduction of a 20T iron-bodied (later steel) wagon. The advantage of this wagon was that it could carry nearly double the weight of its wooden-bodied predecessor saving space in sidings and reducing overall train lengths, but the real advantage was the significantly reduced unladen weight of one steel wagon vs two wooden ones resulting in greatly reduced running costs when being operated empty.
20T Felix Pole wagons enjoyed successful working lives transporting coal throughout the network, but as a lot of smaller industries and private companies couldn't warrant orders for such large loads, much of this work was undertaken operating internal trains and the wagons could often be seen acting as loco-coal wagons or on hire to appropriate industries.
Because Felix championed the arguments for the existence of such a wagon, it eventually bore his namesake and is still recognised to this day.
