A TPWS (Train Protection & Warning System) grid is an apparatus used on the railway as part of the ATP (Automatic Train Protection) system. Specifically, it is a transmitter placed on the track adjacent to a signal and is activated when the signal shows danger. Should a train pass over the grid at an unsatisfactory speed, the brakes will be automatically applied.
Additional grids are sometimes placed further away from the signal on faster running lines to ensure trains have enough distance to come to a halt should a safe approach speed be breeched.
Models of TPWS grids are available for 00 gauge track and can be found at all good model shops.
