What is a slow action point motor?
Slow action point motors are an alternative to the more commonly used solenoid motors. Their name pretty much suggests what they do (they change your points slowly) and if you are considering using point motors for the first time on your layout then you may well be wondering which is best slow action or solenoid?
The truth is it comes down to your personal preference. On balance, solenoid motors are probably a smidgen easier to fit and a little cheaper too, but they do change your points by using electromagnets and that results in the point's operation being somewhat abrupt and they produce a very distinct snap sound which some modellers find irritating.
The advantage of a slow action point motor is that it changes your points using a servo motor resulting in a smooth, quiet and above all slow operation which is more prototypical and rewarding for the modeller.
Both slow action and solenoid point motors physically attach to your points in the same way, wiring them is a little different though. Generally, a solenoid motor will have a power source connected to a CDU (Capacitor Discharge Unit) connected to a passing contact switch connected to the point motor. A slow action point-motor will have a power source connected to a DPDT switch (Double Pole Double Through switch) connected to the point motor.
