What is MOROP?
MOROP is an organisation made up of model railway associations and enthusiasts from around Europe. Their function is to maintain model railway industry standards throughout Europe and when possible beyond.
MOROP takes its name from the words model and Europe. It was founded in Italy in 1954 by the national association of model railway friends but presently resides in Switzerland and has over 30,000 members.
Their core function is to not only define but also maintain the European standards for railway modelling otherwise known as NEM (Norms of European Model railways). These standards are necessary because after WW2 many new manufacturers appeared creating models with variations in scale, couplings, gauge, power supply and wheel dimensions.
Since the mid-1990s, MOROP has worked closely with their United States counterpart (NMRA) resulting in an industry standard for DCC being established not only across Europe but the Atlantic too.
MOROP has an annual convention which is available for anyone to attend. By all accounts, it is quite an occasion with delegates being treated to excursions taking in intriguing railway attractions and hot-spots in the vicinity of the venue.
