Next18 is a DCC decoder standard that is smaller than existing decoders and designed to fit in to locomotives that have limited space, such as N gauge engine and and OO gauge steam engines.
The maximum size of a decoder is about 15mm x 10mm.
The sound version is called Next18S and has a maximum size of 25mm x 10mm.
There is also an "encapsulated" specification with a footprint of 8mm x 5mm.
The interface is designed so that if the decoder is inserted backward, it will not function but no damage will be done to either the decoder or the engine.
