The Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST is a class of steam locomotive designed by Hunslet Engine Company for shunting. The class were designed in 1942 by Robert A. Riddles to solve the country's needs for more shunting locomotives. Following World War II, the UK military kept 90 examples for their use, 75 were sold to the LNER (who reclassified them as J94 locomotives) and the rest were sold to other private and industrial railways. Between 1948 and 1964, a total of 77 further Austerity locos were produced for the NCB. 70 examples of the Austerity have made their way into preservation.
