More info

Airfix Fairey Swordfish Mk.I in 1:72 scale. The Fairey Swordfish, or 'Stringbag' as it was affectionately known by its crews was designed as a carrier-borne torpedo bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. Although already obsolete at the start of WWII, the Swordfish sank more Axis shipping than any other Allied aircraft during the war. It remained in production until mid-1944 and continued in service to VE Day, having already outlived some of the aircraft designed to replace it. Manoeuvrable and easy to fly the Swordfish was a superb torpedo bomber and delivered a devastating attack on the Italian Fleet at Taranto in November 1940. In February 1942, six Swordfish attempted to attack the German Battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during the 'Channel Dash', resulting in the award of a posthumous VC to Lieutenant Commander Eugene Esmonde who led the attack.
