The Class 66 was developed in the 1990s by the British railway company English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) as a successor to EMD's Class 59. It is one of the most widely produced locomotives in Great Britain. The six-axle diesel locomotive, manufactured in Canada, is also very successful in continental Europe. A revised version, designated the Class 77, was introduced in 2005. These locomotives are used primarily in heavy freight service.
