So, you have a a very detailed layout with fantastic scenery, realistic buildings, superbly authentic trackwork, locomotives and rolling stock. You have added the extra dimension of sound or smoke effects to some of your locomotives too. So what’s left to further enhance your layout? Well, maybe you have considered adding lighting to your layout, tempted by the further dimension and atmosphere that it can add to all, including the best of, layouts. As well as lights in your buildings and in your locomotives and rolling stock, there are lights to be found all around the railway infrastructure. If you are comfortable with dealing with model railway electrics, you can get the extra buzz (oops, sorry about the pun!) by installing lights yourself using miniature bulbs such as these from Gaugemaster, rather than buying lighting kits. The advantage of grain-of –wheat bulbs versus miniature LEDs is that they do not require resistors to be included in the circuit and are not sensitive to the polarity of a DC power supply. Bulbs are also more responsive to dimming than LEDs are. It is recommended that you do NOT run grain-of-wheat bulbs at their full power as considerable heat will be generated. Also, running bulbs at reduced voltage can extend the life of the bulbs and, in fact, present of more realistic level of illumination. The 5 bulbs in this pack will display a ‘warm white light that is ideal to represent more traditional incandescent lighting, especially if dimmed down significantly.
