Sometimes even the most competent layout builders encounter a problem with the running of their model locomotives. We’ve all been there: you turn the knob of the controller, be it DC or DCC and nothing happens! The locomotive does not move at all! Finding the cause of the problem generally involves a process of elimination whereby you systematically check all the components in the chain between the controller and the motor in the locomotive. One basic check to be carried out, preferably early on the investigations, is that power is actually reaching the section of track where the locomotive is standing. This clever device from Train-Tech can do this very easily. Simply place on the track and if the track is carrying power the LED will light up. No more endless searching the workshop for your multi-meter! For DCC it will show yellow. For DC it will show green or red depending on the applied polarity. Keep this inexpensive piece of kit close to the layout at all times, not just when you are wiring up the layout!
